Dump Truck Work

Brought in my son's dump truck and my daughters letter blocks...we have a new center! Oh Yeah!
Pull out a block!  Decide which tops to use from the cube and place on an alphabet line!

Love to see how they work together and help each other!

Morning Meeting + Reading = Learning FUN!

Trying to fit everything into a day is near impossible!  Ask any teacher! So I love when I can combine 2 things into 1 lesson!  More bang for the buck as my dad would say!

I LOVE to combine Morning Meeting with Reading!

I have the student pick a card to stretch, blend, then read (some old timers call this sounding it out)!  The student then has to tape the card on his/her shirt.
Each student then walks around the room to find a partner.
Each partner must do some type of class greeting; we love to shake hands!!  We will change the greeting to make it fun each week!
The partner team has to take turns reading the other friends shirt!  Sometimes friends have to help each other!  Click here to see how we blend CvC words
Partners then change and keep reading!  We work until we have greeted each friend or time is up!
This great practice has us talking and speaking to each other to start the day... and we practice reading!  I LOVE when we combine 2+ things!

What greeting do you think we should use?

Spring Flower Blending

The first day of spring has arrived and we are so ready for flowers!!! Oh, yes!!  We are practicing reading words, real and nonsense, to help us focus on the way that sounds go together.  Beautiful tulips to sort into pots is the perfect way to practice reading fun words!

How do we practice reading words? Successive blending!

1st-We say each sound in the words. /b/ /e/ /d/
2nd-We make the first two sounds touch /be/   then add the last sound /d/
3rd-We make all the sounds touch /bbeedd/
4th-Say the word fast-bed
5th-We then decide if the word is real or make believe.
6th-We put the word into a sentence or make up a silly sentence (if it's a nonsense word).
Check out this great resource, Blend Phonics, for teaching may change what you do with sight words!
We also spend some time working on 1 vowel at a time!  We pull the words from a basket!  Then we read the word following the blending procedure and sort the words into a short vowel pot or nonsense word pot!
After reading the word, we write it on a recording sheet to take home and share with our families!
The recording sheet tells what we practiced at school and asks the family to practice the words!  This makes a great home/school connection!
We also have so much fun mixing up all the tulips and then sorting them by the vowel sounds!

How do we make it even more fun?

We hop around the table to sort the middle vowel sounds!

What do you do to make things even more fun?

Fun in Snow

With a winter storm and 2 days of 2 hour delays!  We explored the snow!
We made and threw snowballs!
We pretended we were mountain climbers and scaled high mountains!
We tried to make a snow man!

We also walked with our feet out and in like Peter in the "The Snowy Day."

Make a Magic Table

We have been in school so long and working so hard!  Practicing so many things to get good at being a student! Yeah they seem to be getting bored!
So I decided to change it up!

How? You ask?!?

The magic table!  I have a magic table in my room!  I bet you do too! You can write on it with a "magic" special marker (dry erase + regular old table).
!This is the most focused I have seen them in the past few weeks!  Amazing what a small change can accomplish!
Every student went in the right direction as they practiced forming this  letter to work on handwriting.
Then we practiced stretching and writing words!

Lysol All Purpose Cleaner took it right off!  SO it was ready for the next group!
I wonder how many days this will work!?! So Cool!

Waiting Skills!

I have teamed up with a bunch of teacher friends to create a new blog called Conversations from the Classroom!  We come from all over the country (as well as other countries too!) and work in a variety of classroom settings (Pre-K through Middle School).

Click the button to head on over to read about practice skills to help with waiting!  We do a fun game!
